Eric Hines

Eric Hines

The Tucson Jazz Society is pleased to present the third of their fall series, Jazz Under the Stars, on Friday, October 19th at Tohono Chul Park at 7:00 PM. This concert will feature the sounds of the Matt Mitchell Group for the first half then the amazing sounds of Pan Dulce with steel drum jazz.

The first half of the show features Matt Mitchell’s Hot Club of Tucson, a dynamic group performing Django-style Gypsy Jazz at the highest level. Joining Matt are Evan Dain on upright bass, and Kelland Thomas on alto saxophone. Matt is one of the most versatile guitarists in the country, playing everything from jazz to classical. Evan and Kelland are world class performers in their own right.

For the second half, Eric Hines and Pan Dulce take the stage.  Eric Hines’s ability to solo on the Steel Pan is remarkable. The transcendent sound of the pan is associated with the laid back style of Jamaican music, but in Hines hands, it is like the searing saxophone solos of Sonny Rollins. Joining Hines are the very best of Tucson’s Latin percussionists, Danny Brito, Aaron Szabo, and Robin Horn. Taking this all-star group to the next level are Sly Slipetsky on keyboards, Brian Hicks on tenor sax, Mark Usvolk on bass and special guest Matt Mitchell. This will be one of your favorite concerts of any style this year.

Doors will open and food beverage will be available for purchase beginning at 6:00 PM.
