The Tucson Jazz Society 2015 “Kentucky Derby Jazz Festival” joins Phoenix as a part of Arizona’s celebration of the “International Day of Jazz” providing jazz lovers a weekend of outstanding jazz music. We will also be celebrating the centennial of Billy Strayhorn, a composer and arranger who is best known for his multi-year collaboration with Duke Ellington on songs like, “Take the A Train,” “Satin Doll,” and “Lush Life.”
The Kentucky Derby Jazz Festival will be held at the Lodge on the Desert 360 North Alvernon, Tucson, Arizona.
Fashion, Jazz, and, Mint Julep will be a celebration party like never seen in the Old Pueblo. We will have live jazz, derby attire, silent auction, buffet, hat fashion show, best hat contest, vendors, and most importantly the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby.
Derby day jazz entertainment will feature the music of the Tom Patrick Sextet. It was formed in 1993 and has been a familiar band on the Tucson scene ever since. Since swing is all the rage, they play the swinging sounds of Les Elgart, Count Basie and Glenn Miller just to name a few along plus waltzes and all styles of Latin dance music. They will be paying tribute to Billy Strayhorn, performing some of his great charts such as: “Take the A Train” and “Lush Life,” two of Duke Ellington hits.
