TJI Jazz JAMbalaya with Juli Wood, Paul Silbergleit, and Mike Schlick @ The Glowbal, Sheraton Tucson Hotel
Feb 18 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Chicagoan saxophonist and vocalist Juli Wood, with guitarist Paul Silbergleit and drummer Mike Schlick, join long-time friend Scott Black, as special guests during the first half of TJI’s JAZZ JAMbalaya. For the past 20 years with four albums as a leader, several studio projects as a side man, and countless worldwide performances, saxophonist, vocalist and composer Juli Wood has established herself as a solid, swinging, lyrical and entertaining performer on Chicago’s music scene. Juli has played many jazz clubs and festivals nationally and internationally: Chicago Jazz Fest, Hyde Park Jazz Fest, Milwaukee’s Summerfest; Chicago’s main jazz clubs: Jazz Showcase, Green Mill, Andy’s and Katerina’s; Skansen Jazz and Blues (Stockholm, Sweden), Pori Jazz Fest (Finland), Bent J’s club (Aarhus, Denmark), Storyville (Helsinki Finland), Arlandia Jazz Fest (Aaland Islands, Finland) and the ” Made in Chicago ” jazz festival in Poznan, Poland, to name a few. Juli is in the tradition of saxophonists who were also great vocalists: Cleanhead Vincent, Eddie Harris, and Louis Jordan. http://www.juliwoodsax.com/bio/

Paul Silbergleit is a Milwaukee-based jazz guitarist, composer, educator, and author. Straight-ahead in style, he bears the influence of figures such as Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, and Kenny Burrell. He has performed with a wide array of jazz luminaries such as Melvin Rhyne, Phil Woods, Tierney Sutton, Jon Faddis, Richie Cole, Brian Lynch, David Hazeltine, and Jack McDuff, to name just a few. A member of area jazz supergroup We Six, he has also worked with notable institutions like the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Both his critically acclaimed 1996 debut CD, Silberglicity, and his more recent release, My New Attitude, have climbed into the jazz airwaves and charts. In addition to his performance career, Paul is an active and experienced teacher and clinician, and the author or co-author of numerous widely-distributed instructional materials. He has taught at Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee) and is a longtime faculty member of the celebrated jazz progam at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Mike Schlick is a busy jazz and blues drummer in Chicago. He leads his own organ trio at Buddy Guy’s Legends. He’s in Mike Smith’s quartet at Andy’s every Wednesday night. Mike also has performed with Sheila Jordan, Scott Hamilton, Von and George Freeman, Jimmy Johnson, Lurie Bell, Dave Spector, and Guy King at numerous clubs and festivals in Chicago and Europe.

Tucson Jazz Institute students will be invited to ‘jam’ in the 2nd half of the program. Once again, TJI presents opportunities for its students to perform and rub elbows with professionals in the business of jazz! Javier Martinez, Executive Chef, presents an international menu with something for everyone. RSVP recommended as this is the ‘go to’ event on Mondays! Call 520-321-7621.
