History

The Tucson Jazz Society has been a vital part of the Southern Arizona music scene since 1977 and at its peak, one of the largest jazz societies in the country. Active members and sponsors partnered to introduce phenomenal jazz to the community and to bring jazz musicians a regular venue to come together to jam and perform. Word spread, and the original location became too small to accommodate both musicians and the public.

In 1978, a 501(c) 3 organization was formed as The Tucson Jazz Society to allow for growth in sponsorships and public support. The mission then was to present and promote America’s own original music – jazz. That mission remains our sole focus today.

TJS strives to deliver all forms of jazz to our community – from Dixieland to today’s Contemporary Jazz – performed by a mix of local and internationally-known artists. In 2013, TJS brought to town such jazz greats as Fred Hersch, Charles McPherson, Pete Christlieb, and John Allred. Recent local artists have included Larry Redhouse, The Original Wildcat Jass Band, and Sylvan Street.

TJS continues to deliver more great jazz to more people, more often. Look for jazz at its best performed at venues throughout the region all year long! And look to the Tucson Jazz Society to find jazz all week long at the TJS Jazz Connection.
